UDT Swim Trunks

The MANIAKOS swim trunks, inspired by the original 1940s US navy special forces, use modern materials and thoughtful additional features to ensure comfort, durability, and functionality in the diverse and challenging environments associated with offshore lifestyle.

The distinctive cut of the vintage trunks has been slightly modified to provide more comfort (when not on mission). The inseam has been elongated and rear darts provide volume for a better fit. The high waist allows the shorts to sit perfectly on the hips and creates a slender silhouette specific to the sartorial style of the middle of last century.

The metal D-ring loops are reminiscent of the fasteners used on boat fittings and motorcycle helmets. They are made from "304 grade" stainless steel which is particularly resistant to salt water. They allow an adjustment to the waist of around 3 centimeters (the equivalent of a pants size).

The evolution from the original model reflects advancements in technology and the specific needs of modern use, while maintaining a focus on practicality and operational efficiency when going offshore.

 The original UDT swim trunks

The swim trunks worn by Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) during World War II were distinctive and functional, designed to meet the specific needs of their missions.

The trunks were made from durable, quick-drying cotton material. This choice of fabric ensured that they were lightweight and practical for both swimming and land operations.

They were typically dark blue which helped with concealment in the water during nighttime operations, and beige for trainings and daytime operations.

The swim trunks were relatively short, reaching mid-thigh. This allowed for greater freedom of movement while swimming and reduced the risk of snagging on underwater obstacles.

The trunks featured a secure waistband with a double D-ring loop belt in stainless steel to ensure a snug fit. This was important to keep the trunks in place during vigorous activity.

The design was simple and unadorned, with no unnecessary pockets or embellishments. This streamlined approach reduced drag in the water and minimized the chance of items catching on equipment or obstacles.

The swim trunks were a crucial part of the UDT uniform, designed to balance the needs for mobility, durability, and comfort. They allowed the UDTs to carry out their demanding underwater demolition and reconnaissance missions effectively, whether swimming long distances, planting explosives, or navigating hazardous beach obstacles. The minimalist and practical nature of the trunks reflected the focused and mission-oriented ethos of the UDTs.

These swim trunks became a symbol of the bravery and ingenuity of the Underwater Demolition Teams, contributing to their legendary status in naval history.
